The Doubtful Guest



A crochet pattern for The Doubtful Guest, from the Edward Gorey story of the same name.




Worsted weight yarn in black, white and red. (I used Caron Simply Soft)

Note: Pinning the head to the body turned out to be the only way I was able to sew it on straight. It may just be my non-clever fingers, but I can't recommend it enough.

Wings (make two)

1: With black ch 10, leave long tail to use to sew onto the body.
2-8 : sc 9 across; ch1; turn.
9: sc2tog; sc in next 5 sts; sc2tog; ch; turn.
10-12: sc 7 across
13: sc2tog; sc in next 3 sts; sc2tog
14: sc 5 across
15: sc2tog; sc in next st; sc2tog
16: sc3tog
17: ch 1; finish off.

Legs (make two)

1: With black 6 in magic loop
2: work even
3: [2 sc in next st] x 6 (12)
4: work even
5: [sc in next st; 2 sc in next st] x 6 (18)
6: work even
7: [sc in next 2 sc; 2 sc in next st] x 6 (24)
8-11: work even
12: hdc in next 8, ch 1 turn.
13: hdc in 8 sts, finish off, leave long tail to sew legs onto the body.

Sneakers (make two)

Bottom of Shoe

1: With white 6 in magic loop
2: [2 sc in next st] x 6 (12)
3: [sc in next st; 2 sc in next st] x 6 (18)
4-7 work even
8-15: sc in next 13 sts; ch 1, turn
16: sl st 4; sc in next 5 sts; ch 1; turn
17-19: sc in next 5 sts; ch 1; turn
Finish off, leave long tail to sew up two seams of heel.

Side of Shoe

1: Pick up new loop at the corner of toe and side. Sc around to opposite corner of toe (around the heel); ch 1 and turn. (21)
2-4: sc in next 21 sts; ch 1; turn. Finish off.

Tongue of Shoe

1: Pick up new loop at the corner of toe and and side. Sc to opposite end of toe; ch 1; turn. (7)
2-6: sc 7; ch 1; turn. Finish off.

Scarf

I made a basic garter stitch scarf, really there are so many horizontal stripe scarf options out so you can just pick one you prefer.
